What Does a Fractional CMO Actually Do—and When Does a Business Need One?

Many businesses know they need marketing support. They may be considering a social media manager, hiring an agency, or adding another person to the team. But sometimes the real need comes first: senior marketing leadership.

That is where a Fractional Chief Marketing Officer can make a difference.

A Fractional CMO provides C-level marketing leadership on a part-time, contractual basis. The role brings executive direction into the business without requiring a full-time executive hire. The work is not simply completing a list of marketing tasks. It is setting the direction, aligning people and resources, leading the marketing function, and measuring progress against agreed business goals.

What does a Fractional CMO do?

As a Fractional CMO, I help organizations connect their marketing decisions to their broader business priorities. My work can include:

  • Developing marketing strategy and plans

  • Clarifying brand positioning and communications

  • Building demand-generation strategies

  • Aligning marketing with sales and revenue priorities

  • Leading internal marketing teams and external agencies

  • Managing vendors and marketing budgets

  • Establishing performance measures and reporting to leadership

The exact responsibilities depend on the organization’s needs, team, and engagement scope. I may lead a company’s existing marketing team, guide vendors, or help leaders organize work that has been spread across multiple people and platforms.

The role is executive-level leadership. I set the strategy, guide decisions, and oversee how the work moves forward. The specific responsibilities and measures of progress should be defined at the start of the engagement.

Fractional CMO, full-time CMO, or consultant?

A full-time CMO is an employee working within an organization. A Fractional CMO provides ongoing executive leadership on a part-time or contractual basis. A consultant may be engaged for a defined area of expertise; a Fractional CMO’s role is to provide continuing leadership and integrate marketing with the company’s broader priorities. These arrangements can vary, so the scope and authority should be clear in any agreement.

For a salary comparison, an illustrative full-time CMO salary range of $250,000–$500,000 annually equals approximately $20,833–$41,667 per month in gross salary. That figure does not include employer-paid benefits, payroll costs, recruiting, or other employment expenses. CMO salary estimates vary by source, company size, industry, and location. For example, Salary.com reported a U.S. average of about $374,000 annually in September 2026, while Robert Half published a lower national salary range.

A Fractional CMO offers a different commitment and cost structure. A business engages senior marketing leadership at the level and scope it needs, without making a full-time executive hire. That does not mean every fractional engagement includes the same number of hours, responsibilities, or deliverables. Those details belong in the agreement.

When might a business need a Fractional CMO?

A Fractional CMO may be a good fit when a business:

  • Is growing and needs an experienced marketing leader

  • Has marketing activity across several people or vendors but no shared strategy

  • Needs to connect marketing decisions more closely to revenue goals

  • Is preparing to scale, enter a new market, or approach fundraising

  • Needs senior direction before deciding which roles or agency services to hire

  • Has a marketing team but needs executive guidance and accountability

A particular revenue level does not, by itself, determine whether the model is right. The key questions are whether the business has a real need for senior marketing leadership, the authority to act on that leadership, and the budget to support the engagement.

Why not just hire a social media manager?

If a business says, “We need someone to manage social media,” I would first want to understand what the business needs social media to accomplish. A Fractional CMO can assess the company’s goals, audience, brand, channels, and current systems; then determine whether social media is the right priority and what the strategy should be. From there, I can develop the roadmap and lead the person or team responsible for execution.

Sometimes the best next step is to hire a social media manager. Sometimes it is to improve the website, customer journey, sales process, or measurement system first. The point of executive leadership is to help the business make that decision in the context of its overall strategy.

How I work through Creative Holdings LLC

I provide Fractional CMO leadership through Creative Holdings LLC, the company I founded and lead as CEO. Businesses can engage me for executive marketing leadership, or they can engage Creative Holdings for a broader scope that includes strategy and execution.

In a Fractional CMO engagement, I set the strategic direction, lead the marketing function, and oversee execution by the client’s employees and vendors. When a company also needs hands-on implementation, Creative Holdings can bring in the people and capabilities needed to carry the work forward. Depending on scope, that can include social media, content development, copywriting, design, websites, digital systems, and media campaigns.

The distinction matters: executive leadership and the work required to implement that strategy are related, but they are not automatically the same scope.

Engagements and investment

My Fractional CMO engagements range from $3,000 to $10,000 per month, depending on the agreed scope and level of leadership. Hourly advisory work is $250 per hour. Engagements are structured in three-month increments: three, six, nine, or twelve months, with the option to continue. For organizations seeking both strategic leadership and a wider range of execution support, Creative Holdings engagements range from $3,000 to $18,000 per month, based on the scope and resources required. The work is defined before the engagement begins so the organization can understand what it is investing in and why.

Paid media budgets and third-party costs are separate. Website design, development, and other implementation work are scoped clearly within the engagement. If sales support includes commission, that requires the monthly retainer plus a separate commission agreement and structure. Commission-only arrangements are not available.

The right kind of marketing leadership

A Fractional CMO is not a substitute for every role on a marketing team. It is a way for a business to bring senior marketing leadership into the organization at a part-time or contractual level. My job is to understand the business, set a clear direction, align the work and the people responsible for it, and lead marketing against agreed priorities. When additional execution capacity is needed, Creative Holdings can provide a broader team and implementation support.

If your organization is looking for executive marketing leadership or a strategy-and-execution partner, start with the Services page and submit an inquiry. I’ll review your company’s needs, scope, and budget before we schedule a discovery call.
